Let Salameh Kaileh Go Free!

I read an article about the opposition writer Salameh Kaileh, which shed some light on why this harmless man who suffers serious health problems was arrested. I say this because the title of the article was "About Salameh Kaileh and Syria." But if Amar Diyoub, the Syrian author of the article, published in Al Akhbar (May 5, 2012), could not offer any reliable account of the arrest, many others asked the same questions about the torture and killing of 14-year old Hamza al-Khatib! In any event, I liked the conclusion of Mr. Diyoub's article, for it leaves many people with little more to say about the Assad regime than simple wishes, hoping they are not form of wishful thinking, as implied by the article. My attempt to translate it produced the following:

"We are quite angry about your continued absence, Salameh Kaileh. Many are asking about you on a daily basis, and when I try to answer their queries, I often stumble. But my friend, I try to entertain my false sense of optimism, that you will be soon released, because of your illness and bodily frailty, and also because of your pan-Arabist, Marxist, and Arab leftist tendencies; and even at times because of the political process that is led by Kofi Anan. But I willfully lie to myself when I say: you will be released soon." (translation by Elie Chalala)
