When Rick Owens unveiled its collaboration with Moncler back in February, the Paris-based house both literally and metaphorically took us on a tour through its past, present and future in a customised brutalist bus featuring an all grey interior upholstered in army blankets. “We took Moncler on our road, following a flow of delicious attractions.. trying to make a living out of our disruptive imagination,” Michelé Lamy explained at the time. As both life and business partners, muses, collaborators and so much more, the dream duo continually set relationship goals. As the Rick Owens express rolled into Milan, the pair unveiled the ready-to-wear pieces designed for themselves to wear on the journey, re-fabrications of some of Rick and Michelé’s most-worn garments into high-puff Moncler down.
Since the inception of his goth glam eponymous label in 1994, Rick Owens has always been more than a fashion house. It’s a tribe, a family, a commune, a movement whose inhabitants are shape-shifting, otherworldly daydreamers that lurk in the darkest corners of our imaginations. Over the course of 26 years, its collections of draped, dark, and perfectly cut “glunge” – glamour meets grunge – garments have continually provided much more than just clothes, they are everyday armour. The Moncler + Rick Owens collection celebrates all this and more in a road trip through the people, places and pulse behind the house that Rick built. In customary uppercase, Rick explains the collaboration in his own words below;
Setting off from LA, the city the label and his relationship with Michelé was born, the pair embarked on the ride to Garden Valley, Nevada, with a stop in Las Vegas along the way. Throughout, the roadtrip to Michael Heizer’s monumental land art piece City was entirely Owens-ified. As Rick and Michelé travelled on a matte black tour bus with an all-grey interior that brought the stark aesthetic of their Paris and Venice homes on tour with them, the couple wore Moncler + Rick Owens ensembles which reimagined archive house silhouettes in the outerwear brand’s signature puff and insulation. More than a collaboration, this is a celebration of life. More than a road trip, this is a down-filled journey through the processes, passions, obsessions at the heart of Rick and Michelé’s love. Now that’s relationship goals.
