Fast is a personal feeling and what it means to ‘be fast’ is different for all of us. One thing that unites us, however, is the desire to have a shoe that feels fast on our feet. A shoe that combines a lightweight feel with cushioning and response. A shoe, perhaps, like the brand new SL20 from adidas?

Available to pre-order now from Aljadid Running and priced at £100, the SL20 is an entirely new shoe from adidas that aims to bring the feeling of fast to more people at a more affordable price point. Featuring the brands new Lightstrike midsole, the shoe is reportedly “For all runners. For all speeds. For all who want to feel fast.”

Sounds pretty good right?! We wanted to know more though, so we packed our bags and headed out to Germany to meet some of the team behind the SL20. Join us as we get the low down on what to expect from this exciting new fast shoe.

Featuring a 10mm heel drop and weighing in at around 230g, the SL20 is a very versatile shoe, perfect for everything from your daily miles, to tempo runs and speed work. Its name is inspired by the SL27 released in 1972, but this shoe is bang up-to-date, benefitting directly from technology developed for the more expensive, but incredibly popular adizero collection.

Probably the most notable piece of tech is the new super lightweight Lightstrike midsole. This brand-new compound delivers a great weight-to-cushion ratio and also offers excellent levels of response. You can feel this when you put the shoe on. It doesn’t have the same level of ‘bounce’ that you get from BOOST, but the Lightstrike feels like it supports you through your stride and, coupled with the refined Torsion system, delivers a satisfying ‘snap’ as you push off.

The lightweight theme continues into the upper, which is constructed of a seamless, lightweight mesh. This engineered mesh offers a good fit, with just the right amount of give to allow it to adapt to your foot. It is well vented and the breathable material helps to dissipate heat, which should reduce the chances of blisters when you pick up the pace.

On foot the fit felt very similar to that of the adizero collection. So if you have worn any shoes from that collection you should be fine to stick with your usual sizing here. It hugs the foot, meaning you feel supported when running fast or changing direction quickly.

The grip is taken care of by a hardworking and hard-wearing Continental outsole. The reliable and predictable grip on offer here will be familiar to anyone who has worn an adidas shoe over the past few years and it should wear at a good rate too. Meaning you will get hundreds of miles in before the outsole wears out.
Outside of the tech, we are a big fan of the shoes styling. One of the brands aims with this shoe was to deliver fast for everyone through technology and looks and we think they have done well here. Described as “punk rock meets precision” the shoes have a raw feel with the bold three stripes, that have been slightly distorted, sitting well against the refined finish of the rest of the shoe.

If you are looking for an accessible fast shoe for your next race, or a training partner for the hotly anticipated adizero Pro, the SL20 is a great new option from one of the industries most trusted running brands.
