One of the main benefits of rotating running shoes is to reduce the risk of injury. Many running related injuries are caused by repetition and specifically repetitive movement. Running in the same shoe for every run means your body position will always be the same. This means the same stress is applied, in the same measure, to the same body parts, over and over again, which can eventually lead to injury! Not good.

However, mixing up the shoes you wear can help to avoid this. Wearing shoes with different amounts of cushioning, heel-to-toe drop, midsole height, and other key aspects of construction can vary the load of running enough from day-to-day to help keep those injuries at bay.

The Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports supports this theory. Researchers found that over a 22-week study, runners who rotated their shoes had a 39 percent lower incidence of injury than runners who did almost all of their mileage in the same shoe.
