Al JADID VOL. 4 (1998), ISSUE NO. 24
Issue no. 24 (Vol. 4,1998) features three articles on Algeria's Killing Fields: the first reports on the assassination of Algerian musician and poet Lounes Matoub in "Killing The Singer" by Michelle Marzahn along with two poems by Matoub, translated from the Arabic by Nezar Andary; in the second and third articles Elie Chalala writes on, "A Hidden Governmental Role in the Algerian Continuing Violence" and "Many Causes Underlie Assassinations of Journalists-Why Death of Nations's Conscience Met With Cold Indifference?"

In a Letter from Beirut, poet and author Etel Adnan shares her observations and impressions of what has become of Beirut, a city that was once a haven of culture and arts. The pictures that emerge in Adnan's letter are hardly reassuring: "All you can do is witness Innocence Lost in the reconstruction which is so propagandized....No formality involving any institution can be achieved without a substantial 'bakhshish,' and there is such a consumerism that people will sell anything, their honor before anything else, to buy any gadget, and this because material wealth has become the sole image of one's value so that the greatest humiliation seems the one of being poor, or poorer than one's neighbors."

Reviewing two new books, "Leaving Beirut" by Mai Ghoussoub and "Baghdad Diaries" by Nuha al-Radi, Mona Fayad reveals "The Dark Side of War" in Iraq and Lebanon. In a review of Hanna Mina's "Cloudy on a Sunny Day," Kim Jensen finds in one the Arab world's best novelists the ever present potential of awakening and revolt. In the Arabic books section, "Fathers of Arab Modernism" by Muhyee al-Din al-Lazikani is featured in which the author makes a case for Arab roots of Modernism.

"Al-Nakba: The Palestinian Catastrophe of 1948" is reviewed by William C. Young; while Judith Gabriel writes two features: one about the "Al Nakba" documentary and the other about the controversy surrounding the soon to be released film, "The Siege."

Joseph Zogby writes an impressionistic piece about "Israel's 50th Anniversary;" Ibrahim al-Ariss writes about an Arab enlightenment figure, Abed al-Rahman al-Kawakibi, and the three mysteries that surrounded his life and death; and Sami Asmar revisits the musical legacy of Abdul-Halim Hafez.
